Here is a method of safely balancing the Bing carbs on your Rotax 912 engine without an assistant. Personally I find that this method is far more controllable and gives better and quicker results that other methods that I have used. Here is a summary of what is involved: 1. Obtain a pair of radio control servos with no internal electronics, ie. They are just a motor and gears. Make a pair of aluminium brackets for the servos. Obtain some Lego gears and axles.
Build a small switch box with an internal battery pack (3.6V NiCd) 5. Glue or weld the nut to the carb cable bracket to stop it from turning. Note that the supplied nuts cannot be welded, they disintegrate! Some epoxy resin would probably suffice. Mount the Lego gear on the cable length adjuster.
This can then stay in place. Mount the two servos to the carbs using the brackets that you have made. Route the drive cables into the cockpit and connect the switch control box. Connect your vacuum gauges and route the pipes so that the gauges can be seen in the cockpit.
Slacken the cable length adjuster lock nut and leave it loose on the cable. It must not be allowed to become tight whilst operating the servos otherwise the gears will be damaged. Run the engine and allow to warm up. Adjust the vacuum gauge damping to give a stable reading. Use the two switches on the control box to independently adjust each carb. When they are balanced throughout the rev range you can then pull the throttle to idle and using both switches together the idle speed can be set as required.
When you are finished, tighten the cable length adjuster lock nuts and remove the servo brackets and vacuum gauges. I have put some more photos and drawings of how to make the brackets and control box here: Simplz!
