Click to expand. Are they supposed to be individually numbered? I don't believe Rhino Handmade does that anymore. My copy arrived today and I immediately compared the song 'Wall of Death' on the new CD to the 2004 SACD release. They do sound much different. Very much so. Even though the new CD is mastered louder than the SACD, the new CD has a more fuller sound overall and has a much more balanced sound. The SACD sounds thin and 'brittle', but has a clarity that doesn't seem to be matched by the new CD.
But after listening to the one song twice on both the CD and SACD played on the same machine, I prefer the new CD as it presents the music in a more powerful and 'musical' way. I will probably do more listening to both over the next few days, but based on listening to one song, the above is my initial feelings about the two discs in a 'side by side' comparison.
So to answer my question posed a few posts back. Yes it would seem the new CD sounds better than the SACD. Click to expand.Hhhmmmmm.
I have heard the Au20, the original Hannibal cd (without bonus track), Hannibal vinyl cut by Sterling (this may be a Canadian pressing--I'd have to dig it out to check), and the 4 Men With Beards vinyl reissue. The AU20 and Hannibal vinyl are both too tizzy on the top end which sounds like how Mike in MD and rstamberg are describing the SACD. I much prefer the sound of the original Hannibal cd and the 4MWB vinyl. I haven't compared these two directly, but I suspect the 4MWB would win out. It is surprisingly good (I'd heard mixed things about 4MWB, but took a chance).
